Back to School Organization – Part 3

It’s Monday again, and we had a wonderful weekend celebrating the main man in our house’s birthday! I hope your weekend was filled with exactly what you looked forward to all week. Mine sure was! Today I’m sharing some basic organization that is working for our family right now. Inside our main living area, we have the perfect space for a “drop area”. I would love a mud room/laundry room that could serve this purpose, but that’s not the layout of our home. I wanted to have a space where the kids’ backpacks and shoes are easily accessible without looking like a tornado came through at all times. This has…

Back to School Organization – Part 2

After a quite productive weekend, I’m excited to share with you how our Back to School morning routine has gotten a bit easier with these food storage ideas. Our older two children take their lunches from home every day, as well as a snack, and they are making their own lunches each morning. In order to make that easy and quick for them (and me) I have their food options portioned out and ready to go in the refrigerator and pantry where they can easily reach. We have the third basket because our little guy does not like to feel left out, and he will hopefully transition right into this…

Back to School organization – Part 1

We LOVED our summer break this year! It was filled with just the right amount of travel, fun, sun, swimming, family time and relaxation. There was absolutely no routine and barely any expectations for our children, which is a wonderful way to spend the summer! That all came to a screeching halt the first week of August when all three of them started school. I’ll admit that I do enjoy routines and schedules, and since I don’t really have a Type A personality (at all), I am able to be flexible when it’s necessary. I am significantly more productive when I have a list, and sometimes I can go ’round…

    Guest Room Update

I have always loved having a guest room. It’s just not an option in every home, but we have been fortunate to have a specific room just for guests in both of our homes. In the Big Ole Brick House, our guest room is in the basement. It is a good sized room, but since most of our family also brings two or three small children along {we looove our nieces and nephews!} I wanted the space to be used efficiently. Here is what the room looked like a few weeks ago: I wanted to freshen the paint and add a little character to the walls, so here it is…

    Laundry Room Update

Our little laundry room was pretty blaaah when we first moved here. It is a great space, although a little snug.  The laundry chute is a life saver and the cabinet and built-in storage is great. The two metal boxes are connected to a very old security system. That eyesore and the fact that there was nowhere to hang clothes were my main two negative issues in the room. The first thing I did was paint the yellow (well, they were starting to look pretty brown!) walls that I knew I would not be putting wallpaper over. The paint color I used was Valspar’s Hotel St. Francis Clay Angel. The…

    Easy Snack Storage

Back to School!!! Our kids started the school year August 2nd. That seems so early, I know! But they do get several breaks throughout the year, which I love, so I don’t mind. Wouldn’t matter if I hated it because that’s when school started! I have found that having snack boxes in our pantry comes in very handy on school mornings when I am packing lunches. Now that we have two in school (saaaad face), it is even more helpful. I buy snacks in bulk when they are on sale. For example, I don’t usually buy Fruit Rollups, ok? But they were 50¢ a box, so I bought several and…

    Scotchgard It!

I recently purchased two rugs that I really love from Old Time Pottery. They were each 5ft x 7ft and at $35 each, a price low enough that I can feel comfortable buying two. One is in an extremely high-traffic area: under our kitchen table. I want this area to feel cozy and also to be practical since we eat breakfast and lunch there, and some nights eat dinner as well. I bought two bottles of Scotchguard Rug and Carpet Protector from Amazon in an effort to keep these inexpensive rugs in good shape. With three kids, two dogs {and one clumsy mom} we have lots of spills and dirt.…

    Painting an Outdoor Light

Hello..it’s been a while! Summer is in full swing here and I am loving the combination of leisure and chaos that is summertime with little ones! That, by default, limits my projects, but I’m okay with that. Actually I love that. We soak up the extra time together as a family and I try to make summer break as much fun as possible, while keeping us all sane, fed and clean. I am sharing today a quick update I managed to accomplish during Sunday afternoon naptime. I have been known to allllso join in on the Sunday afternoon nap from time to time, but I opted for this little project instead…

    Improving our kitchen table

I’ve had a minor dilemma in our kitchen that was bugging me. I got this sweet and unusual octagonal table from my great aunt recently that my parents also had in our home at one point. I refinished the top of it with Restor A Finish a few months ago and we’ve been using it in our kitchen. We usually eat there and I love the idea of having heirlooms in our home, but it just wasn’t working. It has leaves on either side that are supported by legs that swing out underneath. The leaves are big, so the table isn’t functional to eat at if they are down. But, the support…
